Many people think of celebrities as having achieved overnight success. This logic is often derived because suddenly one day, this person is on the cover of every magazine. In truth, as our team at The Austin Focus, Inc. has found, for many famous people, whether they are actors, athletes, or politicians, the rise to fame is much slower than what we perceive, often with obstacles in the way. Therefore, it’s worth exploring their words of wisdom on sustaining a successful career.
TV talk show host and comedian Ellen DeGeneres said the following at Tulane University’s 2009 commencement: “Never follow anyone else’s path, unless you’re in the woods and lost and you see a path. Then, by all means, follow that path.” DeGeneres’ own path has been more trailblazing than most, however these words of wisdom reflect an old saying about not reinventing the wheel. If there are lessons to be learned from someone who has gone before you, use them to help guide your career.
While singer Beyonce has a quite a following of personal cheerleaders, this quote in Marie Claire magazine makes it clear that Mrs. Carter believes self-confidence is far more important in defining your career: “You don’t have to depend on someone telling you who you are”.
Finally, there’s Justin Timberlake, whose career has spanned most of his life, starting as a Musketeer, a boy band member, and finally a multi-talented solo artist. Timberlake once said at the People’s Choice awards: “I like being a beginner. I like the moment where I can look at everyone and say, ‘I have no idea how to do this. Let’s figure it out.’” These simple words define both a career of success and what it takes to be a leader.
