When we’re interviewing potential team members, we look for experience, education, and skill set just like most other company leaders do. However, we don’t stop there. We also seek out The Austin Focus applicants who have less tangible assets, such as being friendly and having a high EI.
Known as soft skills, these The Austin Focus traits may not be vital in an entry-level position, but they’re crucial when it comes to advancing one’s career. After all, we can and do teach the technical aspects of our marketing methods, so they become fairly standardized. How a colleague handles our techniques though, and more importantly how we interact with each other, the public, and the brands we represent, is what determines the level of success we can achieve.
Especially in our age of technical advancement and automation, the ability to relate well to others is becoming more and more crucial. The ability to coach or mentor a team member, manage a project that stretches over several departments, or adjust a presentation based on the nonverbal and emotional cues that are being received from an audience – these are not tasks a robot or computer program is yet able to do. The people who can do these things will find themselves moving forward in the fields of their choosing.
While technical knowledge may get someone a job, soft skills will determine one’s career.
